5 Common 4th of July Pet Hazards

We are so excited for all of the Fourth of July traditions. Backyard barbecues, pool parties, fireworks, and celebrations galore make this day so festive. While we’re busy celebrating, our pets may be in danger. Check out the most common Fourth of July hazards below to keep your companions safe this 4th of July.

Alcoholic drinks. While enjoyable for humans, alcohol has the potential to poison our pets. If ingested, your pet may become intoxicated and weak, severely depressed or could go into a coma. Respiratory failure is also possible. Click here to learn more about poison prevention.

Matches and lighter fluid. After you get your fire or barbecue started, keep the matches and lighter fluid out of reach of your pets. Certain matches contain chlorates which may potentially cause difficulty breathing or kidney disease in more severe cases. Lighter fluid is a skin irritant and also dangerous if ingested, causing gastrointestinal upset and nervous system depression.

Citronella candles, insect coils, and tiki torch oil. All of these items make for a comfortable outdoor evening but can cause stomach irritation and nervous system depression if ingested. The oils may also cause aspiration pneumonia.

Fireworks. Keep your pets far away from fireworks that are being set off. In addition to the potential of your pet running away because of the frightening noise, animals don’t know to stay back when you’re setting fireworks off. Lit fireworks can cause severe burns and trauma, while unlit fireworks contain toxic substances if ingested.

Sunscreen and bug spray. If you are protecting your pet from sun and bugs, be sure to use products made specifically for animals. If sunscreen is ingested, it may result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. Additionally, insect repellant containing DEET may lead to neurological problems.
